The Voice of Great Britain's Elite Athletes
On Tuesday 26th September the BAC held it’s annual BAC Athlete Representative Training Day at UK Sport Offices London.
The Training day aimed to support the Athlete Representatives (AR’s) to be more effective in their role, so they could better support their sport and the athletes they represent, as well as develop themselves personally and professionally. The Training day gave AR’s the opportunity to to gain a qualification in Safeguarding in sport, discuss the role of an Athlete Rep and to share best practice across sports.
After an introduction from Victoria Aggar, the morning saw the AR’s undertake a Safeguarding workshop run by UK Coaching. Through involvement and completion of the workshop the athletes gained a UK Coaching qualification in Safeguarding in Sport. Many of the athletes agreed that the Safeguarding training was very interesting and extremely useful.
The afternoon was focused on Athlete Representation. Workshops included the role and responsibilities of an AR, and an expert Athlete Representative panel with Ben Hawes (Chair of the BOA Athletes Commission), David Clarke (Chair of the BPA Athletes Commission) and Victoria Aggar (Chair of the BAC). This gave AR’s the opportunity to ask questions around how to deal with challenging situations, how best to communicate with others and what are the benefits of being an athlete representative? Ben, David and Victoria gave a fantastic insight into athlete representation, and said that being an AR has helped them to develop important skills and supported their life beyond sport.
Jo Harrison (Lead Performance Lifestyle Advisor at the EIS), and Tim Kyndt (UKS People Development Team) led a session around developing a future Athlete Representative training programme. There were some great discussion points and useful suggestions from all the AR’s.
Going forward, our intention is to use those suggestions to shape the direction of an AR training programme working in partnership with UK Sport, EIS and we would welcome input from other home nation sports organisations.
The BAC also held it’s annual AGM, and the day concluded at 5pm.
Special thanks goes to UK Sport, EIS, UK Coaching and the Athlete Rep’s who attended, for their support and involvement in the training day. In particular;
