On Wednesday British Canoeing hosted the pilot Athlete Representative Induction Day, a joint venture between BAC, UK Sport & EIS Performance Lifestyle. Athlete Reps from Canoeing, Athletics, Powerlifting, Triathlon & Shooting all took part. Alex Bailey and Matt Jefferson from the PLA team also attended the day. The delivery team included Lynette Obika (UK Sport), James Bell (UK Sport), Emma Groome (EIS PLA) and Caitlin McClatchey (BAC).
The Athlete Representative Induction Day has been developed to support Athlete Reps to be more effective in their role, so they can better support athletes they represent. It is also an opportunity for Athlete Reps from different sports to share experiences, best practice and learning.
Paul Ratcliffe, Performance Director of British Canoeing, opened the day. This was followed by workshops around role and responsibilities, expectations and local support for Reps from BAC, UK Sport, EIS Performance Lifestyle and NGB World Class Programmes.
After lunch the Reps had an opportunity to hear from a panel of experienced Athlete Reps. Ali Jawad (British Weightlifting), Fran Houghton (British Rowing), Clare Cunningham (British Triathlon) and Caitlin McClatchey (British Swimming) all spoke about their experiences, offered top tips and answered questions.
The next session involved discussing scenarios that an Athlete Rep may encounter as part of their role. Athlete Reps decided whether they should be involved, how they might respond and who they could go to for advice and support. During the last session of the day Reps were asked to suggest ideas for further training areas, which will be used to form part of a future Athlete Rep Training Programme.
Special thanks goes to British Canoeing, UK Sport, EIS Performance Lifestyle Advisors, the Athlete Rep Panel Members and all the Athlete Rep’s, for their support and involvement in the Induction day. In particular;
