The Voice of Great Britain's Elite Athletes
My name is Caitlin McClatchey. I have represented Team GB at three Olympic Games and won World, European and Commonwealth medals for swimming.
I have joined the BAC through a desire to help it grow in its stature and influence. I am proud to be working for an organisation which provides an effective voice for all athletes and puts athlete welfare first. My role is to ensure there is effective Athlete Representation across all UK Sport funded sports, and to support athletes and NGBs with the Athlete Representation process.
As athletes, we train hard for days, weeks and years in order to succeed at the highest level in sport, so it is important that our views are heard and considered when decisions are made about us.
Before the London Olympics I was nominated by my teammates to be part of an Athlete Leadership Group. The group was set up to enhance communication between staff and athletes, and create a better working environment for all. We represented the views of all the athletes during team meetings or discussions. The leadership group was extremely successful as it helped to create a much more transparent and productive environment for the staff and athletes.
Being an athlete representative was very rewarding, as I felt I was in a position to support my teammates and be someone they could speak to. The opportunity enabled me to develop skills such as communication, leadership and helped me to build my confidence when speaking with others. This not only prepared me for life beyond sport, but helped me to perform better in the pool too. I felt valued by peers and most importantly supported by my sports organisation.
I would encourage anyone who wants to support their teammates and NGBs, to further develop life skills, and be part of a wider network of AR’s.
