Roles & Requirements

Requirements and skills
  • Must be an active athlete and either currently a member of the Elite level National team. Or recently retired.
  • The representative will be elected by athletes currently in the elite level National team.
  • The representative will be elected for a period of (1year) from the date of the election result.
  • The representative must be a well-organised and skilful communicator, able to work with athletes, the sport’s National Governing Body Executive and external senior administrators and organisations.
  • The representative must have a commitment to athlete representation and rights at a National Governing Body level and above, combined with a desire to work to improve British Sport.
Responsibilities
  • To facilitate two-way communication between the athletes and the sport’s National Governing Body Board, Performance Manager/Director and support staff.
  • To present to the sport’s National Governing Body Executive any issues that the athlete(s) wish the Executive to be made aware of.
  • Any issues that concern more than one athlete must be proportionally weighted and presented to the Executive accordingly.
  • To be included in any decision making process that directly affects the athletes.
  • To be in attendance at committee meetings and bring salient issues to the attention of the Performance Manager/Director and committee as appropriate.
  • To ensure clear, transparent team selection criteria are in place and well communicated to the relevant athletes.
  • To ensure a fair selection appeals process is in place and adhered to. To facilitate the appeals procedure when required.
  • To represent the sport on national athlete representative bodies
Other
  • Expenses incurred by the athlete representative travelling to any meeting where they are representing the sport’s athletes in an official capacity will be met by the National Governing Body.
  • Athletes’ should recognise that their first point of contact is the athlete representative.
  • Anonymity can be given to athletes if requested.
