The Voice of Great Britain's Elite Athletes
As an athlete I received support from the BAC when a reclassification meant I was no longer eligible to compete in Paralympic events. The BAC reached out to me and helped me through a very difficult time in my career, throwing their energy and resources into building a case against the decision. At the time their support meant so much. It was like being thrown a life raft in the middle of a storm.
When a vacancy opened up at the BAC a year later I jumped at the opportunity. I wanted to be part of an organisation where athlete welfare is the main priority. The independent advice and guidance given to athletes can really make a difference to their performance and I am proud to represent the BAC now as an Appointed Representative Assistant.
I have been brought on board to develop the Athlete Representative network to facilitate better communication with our members. There are approximately 1,400 members of the BAC across more than 40 high performance sports, including most Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. We need driven individuals who are passionate about athlete welfare to act as our Athlete Representatives and signpost the services we provide to the other athletes in your sport.
If you believe you can make a positive contribution to the improvement of British high performance sport by becoming an Athlete Representative please take a look at the Job Description below, which will explain what the role entails and how to apply.
The only regret I have from my career as a high performance athlete is not preparing for my transition out of sport better. I was so focused on winning gold medals that I forgot to look further ahead and when it came to applying for work my CV severely lacked experience. Being an Athlete Representative would give you demonstrable skills and responsibilities, building the career portfolio of any athlete looking to prepare for life after sport.
If you are unsure whether there is a BAC Athlete Representative is in your sport please contact me.
The BAC is committed to equality of opportunity in sport and welcomes applications from all within the athlete community. To be eligible you must either be a current member of an NGB’s Performance Unit or a recently retired athlete and all Athlete Representatives are given free membership of the BAC for the period they are in post if they are not automatically members as a result of being on World Class funding.
